Hello Monarch families!
It has been brought to my attention that our concert dates aren’t being consistently communicated, so I have attached the entire MK8 music calendar here for you all to see. All of the band dates are in bold and it also includes Choir and Orchestra dates. This is the same calendar that was handed out at Back to School Night if you were there.
These are only middle school dates so none of the 5th grade concerts are on there. If you have a 5th grader, our concert for Fireside is on 12/17 from 1:45-2:30 and our concert for MK8 is on 12/19 from 2:30-3:30.
It seems like we can’t win with the weather and this event this year! First one got flooded out, this one is pouring rain… But we’ll still have fun!
The updated schedule for tonight: (Thanks for your flexibility! We’ve had beautiful weather all week and of course today has to throw a wrench in our gears!)
6:15 Arrive CHS, warm up in CHS lobby
6:50 We play Star Spangled Banner with MHS Marching Band to start the game
7:00 back inside, get your stuff together, etc.
7:15 8th graders leave
8th grade students – i’m not sure everyone will check the website, so please get word out to your friends and fellow 8th grade musicians about our schedule for tonight. Text them, call them, hit them up on the facebook, just help get word around please! Sorry the time you’re with us is cut short for tonight, but at least we still get to play the Star Spangled Banner together!
Hello 8th Grade families -
Hope you are staying safe and dry today! Due to the weather and the closing of BVSD schools today, the MHS football game has been rescheduled. We will instead be playing at the game on Friday, September 27 with the MHS Marching Band! More details will follow soon.
Welcome to the new school year! If you are a student looking for the instrument rental form, click the link below. I did say in class that it would be part of the handbook, but I’m having difficulties getting the format to remain intact from a previous document so the handbook will be forthcoming.
Click the link below, print it out, and fill out all the top portion. A primary instrument is one that you will be playing full time. An example of a secondary instrument would be a student plays flute in concert band but wants to play trombone only for jazz band. If this is the instrument that you will be playing for the entire school year as your main instrument, that is your primary. Please email me if you have any questions regarding which category you fall in to (but if you’re getting an instrument for concert band, there is a 99.5% chance it would fall under the “major or primary instrument.”)
This is a reminder email with a few extra details included from Ms. Clare Church, director at MHS.
8th Graders! Congratulations– You have 6 weeks of middle school left! High School is just around the corner, and so is High School band!! We have a couple of important meet-n-greet, play together, get to know everyone nights coming up, and these are MANDATORY for anyone planning to do high school band next year (concert band or jazz)
Normally I only post information that is going on in our day to day class or concert details, but I would be remiss if I didn’t share this article that shares one man’s account of the value of music outside of the obvious “playing great music.”
This was written by a man who switched from a degree in music to a degree in business and talks about how the critical thinking skills, teamwork, and discipline gave him a huge advantage in the business world:
There have been many great articles that i’ve seen lately– Another one that stands out in particular but I couldn’t locate it was a mom’s account of all the wonderful things marching band did for her kids and how it prepared them for success in their lives–but they all have the same point. “Music is an art and a science, and it’s one of the best ways kids can learn creativity and those mythical critical thinking skills. The focus of the curriculum isn’t forcing everyone to learn about Bach or Mozart. It’s about learning how to think, rather than what to think.”
Click the link below to get the letter home to all 6th grade families. The CU Wind Ensemble is already aware that the 6th graders participating from MK8 and LMS will be unable to attend that evening due to the concert. I am truly excited about this concert.. the kids are sounding INCREDIBLE and it is really going to be a joy for both the audience and the performers!
We have 3 concerts coming up! Our first one on Monday, Jan 28 is a 7th and 8th grade band festival. Students will be dismissed from their 1st period class at 9:00am to rehearse with LMS and EK8 bands at MHS, enjoy a pizza lunch ($3 if you haven’t brought it already!), and will be back in class by 12:15. Concert starts at 7:00pm in the MHS auditorium.
Next, we have our annual Swing Dance on 2/8 featuring the jazz bands from MK8, EK8, LMS, and Angevine.
Our third concert coming up is the 6th grade band festival at MK8 on 2/20. This will feature the 6th graders from MK8 and LMS collaborating on a concert of movie themes. Students will rehearse from 4:30-6:30pm and concert begins at 7:00pm. Once the lot is full, we are encouraging families to park in the bus loop behind the school.

Dear 7th and 8th grade band families,
Our Louisville Parade of Lights performance is coming up, so here is your go-to sheet of details about this performance!
Rehearsals are December 4, 5, and 6 from 4:00-5:30 in the Monarch High School band room. Students need to attend at least two of these rehearsals to participate in the parade on Friday night.
Performance is Friday, December 7. Students need to meet in the parking lot of the Elks Club on Main Street at 6:30 dressed warmly. Students can decorate their instruments with lights, garland, etc. and a Santa hat or something along those lines is encouraged!
Looking forward to seeing the 7th and 8th graders in action as a marching band! This is always a really fun event and I hope everyone will be participating!
